Education Minister Paul Givan has officially opened Kilmaine Primary School’s new family outdoor learning and wellbeing space following funding from Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund.

The school has transformed an unused outdoor area into a vibrant and inclusive environment where pupils and their families can grow their own food, explore nature, and take part in hands-on learning activities that support sustainability.

The initiative has already seen 600 pupils, staff, and family members get involved, with a grand unveiling taking place on 5th June.

Charlotte Clarke, Community Fund Ambassador for Belfast City Airport, said:

“As an airport based in the heart of the city and the community, we are proud to support projects that encourage outdoor learning, promote wellbeing, and help young people develop a stronger connection to the world around them.

“Kilmaine Primary School has created a fantastic space that brings families together, sparks creativity, and inspires positive habits that can last a lifetime.

“This is a perfect example of the kind of community-focused initiative our Fund was designed to support.”

Since its inception in 2009, Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund has donated over £656,000 to more than 231 local charities and community organisations.

Rachael Sinnamon, Principal at Kilmaine Primary School, said:

“The funding from Belfast City Airport has allowed us to bring this project to life and create a truly enriching experience for our pupils and their families.

“It has been amazing to see the children’s enthusiasm grow as they plant, explore, and learn in this space.

“The impact has gone beyond education – it has helped build confidence, foster a sense of responsibility, and bring our school community even closer together.”
