Airport will clarify issues but seeks a timely inquiry

Following the Environment Minister’s decision to call a public inquiry into the airport’s application to extend its runway, Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of George Best Belfast City Airport said:

“We are confident that through a timely public inquiry process we can reach a positive outcome to a process we commenced two years ago.

“We are happy to once again, engage in this process but would call for the inquiry to be held in a fashion that does not postpone still further a much needed boost to the economy through increased access, job creation and tourism revenue.

“There is widespread support from business, tourism, the travelling public of Northern Ireland and the local community to extend the runway which would enable airlines to offer direct flights to European destinations from the heart of Belfast, providing consumer choice and furthering access to the region.

“Belfast City Airport is a private company wishing to make another large private infrastructure investment which will benefit Northern Ireland.

“Jobs, future funding and new economic and tourism revenue streams have been put on hold at a time when our economy needs them most.

“Bearing in mind the economic significance of this proposal I trust that this public inquiry will be concluded within a timely manner.
